Tornadoes, thunderstorms, and strong rain can occur under cumulonimbus clouds, or so-called “incoming clouds,” and can cause serious damage. Let’s take a look at what to watch out for in each case.

Tornado

Tornadoes can send everything flying and cause buildings to collapse. If a tornado is close by, take shelter in a sturdy building or lie down in a shady spot or hollow, watching out for flying roof tiles and other debris. (*Prefabricated buildings, garages, storage sheds, etc. are dangerous as they may collapse.) If you are indoors, take shelter away from windows and walls, and protect your head and neck under a sturdy desk.

Lightning

Be especially careful when playing outdoor sports such as golf, football, and baseball, and when enjoying leisure activities in parks, on the beach, and in the mountains. If you hear a rumble of thunder, evacuate to a building or car immediately. (*Thunderclouds approach faster than you think.)

You may be struck by lightning not only from above, but also from the side of a tree trunk or branch. Keep at least 4 meters away from trees and poles. It is most dangerous to go under a tree to take shelter from the rain.

Strong Rain

Finally, take precautions against heavy rain. Recently, the number of disasters caused by localized heavy rain has been increasing. Be careful of sudden rise of water in mountain streams, riverbeds, creeks, parks, and other places.　

*If you see muddy river water or tree branches flowing down, get away from the water’s edge immediately.
